The Outlaw Gunner Jacket - 25th Anniversary Edition

For generations, wildfowling was a way of life along the Eastern Seaboard and market gunning had been a necessary and respected profession. With the enactment of the Migratory Bird Act of 1918, the variant interests of the market gunner and the Federal Game Warden unfolded as a real-life cat-and-mouse game. The struggle became legendary and nowhere was it more vividly played out than along the tidewaters and estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay. Part-time friends and part-time foes, one thing the gunner and the warden shared equally was the bitter gnaw of winter’s salty northwest blows.

When it comes to staying warm, modern-day outfitters have nothing on these men. Dressing in layers was just common sense and the Outlaw Gunner quilted shell was a key component of every bayman’s garb. Worn as an intermediate layer under oiled cotton smocks and bib pants, early versions were often fashioned from discarded quilts or horse blankets.

Our 25th Anniversary Outlaw Gunner Jacket is a limited production run, each jacket is marked with a unique serial number identifier. Made with our exclusive, 6oz. DryHandle, 100% cotton weatherproof fabric. This garment is an updated rendition of this time-honored, essential component of warmth on the bay. A tight 2x2 quilt pattern over the DryHandle helps to build air pockets in the poly-fill insulation and keeps them in place. Two large pockets in front, zippered arm pocket on sleeve, two utility pockets inside. The body is full, broad and fully lined with 100% cotton shirting fabric; sleeves lined with nylon. Cotton-nylon rib knit cuffs, neck, waist, and underarm gussets.

Spot clean by hand using mild soap if necessary. However, DryHandle fabric is stubbornly stain-resistant, so a once-over with a damp sponge is usually all you will need.

Excellent performance

In addition to being a very stylish jacket, I found the Outlaw Gunner to be surprisingly warm and water-proof. The DryHandle fabric is old school in looks and touch, but new school in function. Overall an excellent piece!

Love it!

I've had my new jacket for about a week now and I love it. The quality is great and the attention to detail is very impressive. The jacket feels like a testimony to old school, traditional workmanship and design, which I truly appreciate. I highly recommend it. One more thing -- I initially got a size too big and Engle and the Atlantic Rancher team were great about quickly replacing it. Keep up the great work!

Wrapped in luxury

This is a fantastic jacket. Old school stylist and great construction. Very satisfying feel through the various textures. I do find the sizing running a tad small. I normally wear a large with good space and this is slightly tight if I have more than one layer under it. Shouldn't complain cuz I look better in it when it's sleek. Great fabric, would buy it again!

Thanks, Peter! yes, we trimmed this jacket up a bit throughout the body and even the sleeves. Back in the day, this piece was worn as mid-layer by waterfowl gunners on the Eastern Shore with heavier outer layers applied according to the weather. And remember, we can always trade you out for a larger size if you want. But is sounds like this one is growing on you and you are stylin'! - Best, Engle

Received my jacket on Christmas Eve- Merry Christmas to me! - and it is STUNNING. The craftsmanship is perfection, but then, knowing the Atlantic Rancher team, I would expect nothing less. It won’t make it into my closet - I’m keeping it on the hook by the door where I can see it constantly since it will be in regular rotation. My only ask is that you consider expanding your sizing — my bestie is a big guy (Size 3XL Tall) and I’d buy him one of everything you make if they’d fit him! As it is, he’s gonna have to seethe with jealousy and just tell me how awesome I look in mine. Honestly, a new favorite — timeless, classic, and perfect for our Pacific NW weather. Thank you for bringing this kind of tradition and style back to our wardrobes!! ❤️

Awesome, Lourdes! we'll me expanding our size runs soon...
