Story

For generations, wildfowling was a way of life along the Eastern Seaboard and market gunning had been a necessary and respected profession. With the enactment of the Migratory Bird Act of 1918, the variant interests of the market gunner and the Federal Game Warden unfolded as a real-life cat-and-mouse game. The struggle became legendary and nowhere was it more vividly played out than along the tidewaters and estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay. Part-time friends and part-time foes, one thing the gunner and the warden shared equally was the bitter gnaw of winter’s salty northwest blows.

When it comes to staying warm, modern-day outfitters have nothing on the market gunners of the early 20th century. Dressing in layers was just common sense and a jacket like the Outlaw Gunner quilted shell was a key component of every bayman’s garb. Worn as an intermediate layer under  oiled cotton smocks and bib pants, early versions were often fashioned from discarded quilts or horse blankets.

Our 25th Anniversary Outlaw Gunner Jacket is a limited production run; each jacket is marked with a unique serial number identifier. Made with our exclusive, 6oz. DryHandle®, 100% cotton weatherproof fabric. This garment is an updated rendition of this time-honored, essential component of warmth on the bay. A tight 2x2 quilt pattern over the DryHandle® helps to build air pockets in the polyester microfiber insulation and keeps them in place. Two large pockets in front, zippered arm pocket on sleeve, two utility pockets inside. The body is cut full and broad across the shoulders and chest. Fully lined with 100% cotton shirting fabric; sleeves lined with nylon. Cotton-nylon rib knit cuffs, neck, waist, and underarm gussets.

Spot clean by hand using mild soap if necessary. However, DryHandle® fabric is stubbornly stain-resistant, so a once-over with a damp sponge is usually all you will need.

Comments: The fact that Engle answered an email sent late on Friday night on the weekend was pretty amazing. If I had any complaint about the Outlaw Gunner Jacket, it would be about the zipper pull. I really like a larger one or at least one with a good-sized, gripable pull. One other consideration might be lining the bellows pockets with something like a synthetic moleskin. I have handwarmer pockets on a Barbour coat that really are welcome in cooler weather.
What A Great Jacket!

After an email exchange about sizing, I placed my order on Tuesday and received it on Friday afternoon! My new Outlaw Gunner Jacket is exactly as described but better. I wanted to use the jacket especially for my work as an EMS helicopter pilot. The sizing is perfect for wearing over a Nomex flight suit and a thin fleece vest. The outside pockets are perfect for gloves, beanies, a flashlight, and a phone. I am really impressed with the collar! It is tall enough to block the wind but with ample room for me to tuck my chin in, not to mention how comfortable the cotton/nylon ribbing is. The sleeve pocket is perfect for the fatter pens and pen lights I need to carry at night. The underarm gussets allow a lot of upward mobility without restriction, perfect for climbing up the side of my helicopter for pre and post flight inspections, not to mention reaching up in the cockpit to operate the overhead switches. All in all, it's an excellent combination of bomber and hunting jacket. I think you've hit on a very good balance of insulation as well. Just standing out in the pasture here with a 10-15 knot wind out of the west, at 45 degrees F, the jacket is very comfortable over a T-shirt. And later that night it was equally at home over that light fleece vest and my Nomex flight suit as the temps dropped down into the upper 20's and I had to stand out on an elevated hospital helipad refueling and waiting for my medical crew. (It proved to be a bit too warm in the cockpit with the heater running.)

Now on my week off, the Outlaw Gunner Jacket is my go-to over a T-shirt for walking the dogs, going into town, for just about anything. Wind, rain, cold, it doesn't matter. This jacket functions extremely well.

This past fall, I gave all my leather flight jackets to my son. A couple of A-2's in goatskin as well as a G-1. They were heavy, restrictive, and though they blocked the wind well, not really very warm. They were beautiful but I think my son can get more use out of them than I could. I'd been looking for a reasonable replacement ever since. This Outlaw Gunner Jacket is lighter, extremely flexible, and a much, much more functional piece of gear. I'm really excited to have one!

Investment quality, accessible price and one heck of a jacket!

Been wearing my Outlaw Gunner Jacket a couple of weeks now. You know when have that feeling that, 'you've found THE ONE"? Well that's how I feel. I've been looking high and low for THAT one jacket. Found it. Light enough on a not so cold day, but warm enough on one of those brace yourself for the cold kinda days too. In Illinois, we get it all..in a matter of hours frequently.

The OGJ feels like a quality made jacket I'll have for a long time. It's not a throwaway-this will get me through a season or two kind of jacket. It's well made--you can feel it. I have room to move yet it's smart looking and doesn't look sloppy or mis-sized.

The material isn't heavy--but the warmth it provides is there in spite of that. Am I going to Antarctica in this jacket? Maybe not, but for average winter days, this is my go-to piece of outerwear.

Looking forward to my investment paying dividends in the years to come. I feel like I got a great value for the price. Oh, and the burnt orange color is awesome for this guy that likes color but doesn't necessarily want to stand out in the crowd.

This jacket does stand out in a crowd of similar products and I'm glad I did the research and pulled the trigger to own it. Fast (a couple of days) shipping and follow up questions answered super quickly.

Comments: I really appreciate the outstanding customer service
You won't be disappointed

I received my jacket at the perfect time to put it to the test. Storms have been hammering the West Coast and I've been outdoors, cutting up downed trees and clearing debris from the carnage. This jacket repels the rain with ease and also allows you to move freely. I'm '5-11" 190 lbs and wear a 44 R in most coats. I went with size large. I've worn a mid-weight flannel shirt underneath and it feels quite comfortable.
Love the Burnt Orange color, lots of compliments! Happy I discovered Atlantic Rancher. Quality, functional clothing built for folks in the real world. Buy it!

Comments: Great to have you back, Engle. Like with Lewis Creek, I never knew why you went away, but I was sorry to see you both disappear.
A Knockout

I have been waiting for the 25th Anniversary Burnt Orange Outlaw Gunner Jacket to be available so I bought it as soon as you had stock.
Great jacket, I am very happy with it.
As a customer of Atlantic Rancher going back to the early ‘90s, I was very disappointed when you mysteriously went away.
Glad to have you back making quality, hard core, old school, outdoor gear.
I still have my AR Ranger Sweater from 25 years ago, a real favorite.
Keep up the good work, Engle!

Comments: Awesome jacket and excellent online information and support.
Outlaw Gunner Jacket-Awesome!

Thank you for this jacket!!! I’m an avid waterfowler from Minnesota. My sons and I love late season diver hunts. We live near Lake Christina and Lake Jenny in West Central Minnesota. They are famous for being one of the largest migrational stops for Canvasback and Redheads in the upper Midwest. Ironically, I received one of Atlantic Ranchers catalogs back in the late 1990’s. I loved the merchandise but lost the catalog. Now, here you are! Thank you for your perseverance and best of wishes in 2023!!!
