Story
The Boys at Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works know a little something about shorts. Dock shorts particularly and Capt. Johnny Williams specifically. Not only is he the captain on the 58’ Caliban, Roy Merritt’s personal boat, he’s also a master boat builder and interior carpenter which makes him one of the most versatile and skilled hands at “the yard.” He’s been at it since he was 18yrs old.
So when it came to sea trialing our new Dock Shorts, we turned to Johnny. His requirements were simple: a durable cotton fabric that will wear well year ‘round…”it gets real hot down here in the summer;” a flat-front, zipper-fly style that is comfortable in all the right places, especially in the crotch, legs and seat. “Ease of movement is critical, but they can’t be baggy…I can’t have shorts that flap around in a breeze and get hung up on hardware,” he says. “Just give me a pair of shorts that lets me go from working on Hull #110 to the flybridge of the Caliban in one fell swoop and I’ll be happy.”
The last word from Johnny: “Y’all can do all the fancy stuff you want, but if it don’t fit just right, it ain’t for me.”
We got you Johnny.
The Atlantic Rancher Dock Short is built from the same mold as our now famous Dock Pant. It is every bit a durable, functional, year ‘round work short…suitable for work in the bilge as it is comfortable and presentable wear at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club on saturday afternoons. Cut from mid-weight, 10oz cotton twill, the fabric contains 2% Elastane for superior comfort and all-day wear. The build is a traditional waistband, flat-front construction with a YKK brand brass zipper fly closure. Stowage compartments include two on-seam side pockets, a coin pocket, and two set-in back pockets with button closures. The fit is a traditional straight-leg to the 8.5" inseam. Not too long and not too short...just right. The waist sits right on your hips, but these ain’t lowriders. Oh…and one more thing: you put them on one leg at a time.

The Atlantic Rancher Dock Pant is every bit a durable, functional, year ‘round work pant…suitable for work in the bilge as it is comfortable and presentable wear at the IGFA Annual Awards Dinner. Cut from mid-weight, 10oz cotton twill, the fabric contains 2% Elastane for superior comfort and all-day wear. The build is a traditional waistband, flat-front construction with a YKK brand brass zipper fly closure. Stowage compartments include two on-seam side pockets, a coin pocket, and two flap-over back pockets with button closures. The fit is a traditional straight-leg, but it’s what we call “updated traditional” meaning they’re roomie enough but not blousy. The waist sits right on your hips, but these ain’t lowriders. Oh…and one more thing: you put them on one leg at a time.
