Hail to the saltwater cowboys!
Leather Rancher Coat, 30th Anniv.
Details:
Rugged – Built from 100%, genuine full-grain cow leather, meticulously hand stitched on a double needle machine, using heavy duty nylon/cotton thread. Reinforced stitching at stress points. Double needle seams throughout.
Durable – This is not a coat you need to baby along…the more you rough it up, the better it gets. Vegetable tanned, drum dyed and hand finished in Italy. The topside is hand-tipped and slightly sanded to achieve a rich sueded hand-feel and a patina that evolves with hard, meaningful wear.
Functional – Expandable shoulder gussets for increased mobility and comfort. Rancher style cuffs lined with 100% cotton corduroy, with two vertically set adjustable button closures. The collar is also lined with corduroy and set on a thoughtfully shaped collar stand and has ample height for fully blocking side-on wind and other elements. The body and sleeves are fully lined with quilted rayon twill with 80gm poly-fil for an added layer of warmth.
Hand Cut / Hand Tailored – Every hide is individually selected at the tannery for grain consistency, thickness, and absence of scars. Each panel of leather is matched to its adjacent part before it is hand cut with a head knife. Each component of the coat: the sleeves, the collar, the cuffs are hand tailored and fit for precision joinery. All of this happens, not in a factory, but in a humble shop the size of a soup kitchen by three master leather craftsmen who’ve been at this for a combined 120 yrs.
The Wearing – If this coat could talk, it would confidently tell you it couldn’t care less what it’s being paired with. A simple long sleeve t-shirt or our heavy Maine Lobstermen’s Sweater. It just doesn’t matter! Once saddled upon your shoulders, it takes full command of its surroundings and whatever else you are wearing falls in line. And by the way, this coat will speak loudly without whispering a sound.
Only 35 coats built in this initial production run.
Some distance off the coast of Maryland and Virginia lays Assateague Island, a 37-mile-long barrier island that is the free-range home to a herd of wild horses known as the Chincoteague Ponies. The herd survives solely on indigenous grasses, mainly saltmarsh cordgrass and American beach grass. Every summer, for as long anyone can remember, a group known as the “saltwater cowboys” make their epoch swim to the island from the mainland for the annual round up. To survive, the herd must be maintained at 150 adult animals. Most ofthe foals are auctioned off and the remaining horses swim back to the Island.
This century old association between man and horse is a romantic and primeval exhibit of mutual enrichment and the inspiration for Leather Rancher Coat. The lines are simple and whisper rather than shout its elegance. The hides used here are full-grain, Italian cowhides. The subtle top-grain texture is natural, not printed…solely a function of the tanning process. Two ample front pockets with broad weather flaps and one left chest pocket with button through flap closure. Fully lined in nylon quilted over a thin layer of insulation.
Horses. Whispers. Salt air. Barrier islands. Sand. Tides. For Ranchers everywhere.

People Usually Ask
1. Where are your products made?
All of our shirts, pants, outerwear, sweater, belts and moccasins are made in Portugal, mostly in the same shops we've been working with for over 25 years. Our hand-sewn leather goods, hats and a few other items are made in America.
2. How would you describe the fit of your clothes?
Our fit is what we call contemporary, meaning they're not overly baggy or boxy, but have ample room and freedom of movement. Also, our outerwear is uninsulated, or very lightly insulated. It's cut with enough room to allow you to layer underneath, with a sweater, a vest or even a light down-filled jacket. For us, layering is always the way to go!
3. Will your shirts and pants shrink after washing?
Simple answer is no. All of our shirts and pants are pre-shrunk. At most you will experience a 2% shrink factor after washing and drying.
4. What is DryHandle®?
Dryhandle® is a 100% cotton, weatherproof fabric that we develop in 1995. Starting with 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton the thread is very tightly woven resulting in a fabric so dense that it's thornproof and, even at this stage, surpasses the U.S. government test for rainwear. The fabric is then impregnated through the proprietary DryHandle® process which irreversibly transforms the cotton fibers themselves to make them inherently water-resistant and stain-resistant. Unlike oiled or waxed cotton fabrics, DryHandle® is extremely lightweight, has no odor, won't stain other clothing or upholstery and resists stains from hard use and long wear. Despite being water-resistant, the weave contains millions of microscopic pores that vent moisture, making DryHandle® garments exceptionally breathable and comfortable to wear.
5. How long does delivery usually take?
Orders received by 2pm PST are usually shipped the same day. In most cases we ship via USPS Priority Package, and orders to the East Coast typically arrive in 4 days or less. West of The Mississippi orders arrive in 2-3 days.
6. How do i reach the founder of the company?
Easy! You can email him (that would be me, Engle) at engle@atlanticrancher.com or you can call me at 206-919-0943. I am around most of the time, but i miss you, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
7. If an item is out of stock will you let me when it's available again?
We maintain an active "wait list." So when you send a message asking to be notified when the item, color and size becomes available, we actually do something worthwhile with your request. We catalog your request and email you once the item becomes available again.
8. Who writes your copy and are the stories true?
The answer to the first part of this question is: me, Engle Saez, founder of the company. For part #2...there's an old adage that applies here: "you can't make this shit up." And I will just say that the stories I tell are as true as I can make them and as accurate as my memory allows. That's a true story...
9: Where did the name Atlantic Rancher come from?
The origins of our company's name is a long story, one will share in blog post at some point. But for now, all should know that we are forever grateful to Susan Turner for her original and very creative idea.
10: How do I return or exchange a item?
Returns are easy, but please follow our process. Email us at orders@atlanticrancher.com, include your order number in the subject line and tell us what you'd like to return and why. We'll review your return request and email you a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with the return-to shipping address. Please be sure to package your item(s) thoughtfully so goods aren’t damaged in the process. Select and use the carrier of your choice as return shipping is not covered by us. Please select “signature required” to ensure your return package is receipt confirmed.
We’ll let you know via email when your package has been received, inspected and your refund is issued. Refunds usually take 5-10 business days to process.
If you need to exchange an item, the best process is this: 1. Place a new order for the item you want. 2. Return the item you don't want to us, following the process outlined above.
