Outlaw Gunner Vest – 25th Anniversary Edition

  • Wear it as a secondary layer, indoors and out – This is a super versatile, transition garment that works equally well indoor as it does outdoors…sitting at a desk or steering your garvey through the marsh.
  • Fits snug to the torso…as a vest should – Vests must be fitted just so…otherwise they’ll bunch up around the neck, back and around the armhole. This one gets it just right!
  • Durable – DryHandle®, the 100% cotton shell fabric is weatherproof, breathable and develops character as it wears in.
  • Functional – All aspects of this build work together…from the stand-up collar to the front packet “Doghouse” snap closure configuration, to the numerous pockets, and the adjustable tabs at the hips.

Comments: I love the products, would love to open a mercantile to feature them in Newburyport, MA!
Bought it in three colors

I’ve been getting so many compliments for the vest that I bought one in each color, they run a little smaller. I’m 6 foot three 230 pounds and an extra large fits perfectly but a large is a little tight, I love their stuff that’s all!

One in every color

Absolutely love the vests, L is a bit tight, XL (6’3” 225lbs) is better, but wife loved it so much I had to get one in all three colors

The VEST is the Best

The first time I ever shopped on this site was two weeks ago. I ordered the 'classic' Outlaw Gunner vest in olive green. Although a tad pricey, the garment is worth every penny. The description turned out to be 100% accurate. It's extremely well-made. I can't wait to return to the Northwest so that I can wear it every day.

Comments: Hoping that you can restock Boatyard pants - I've acquired two pairs and would like to have more.

Love my new Outlaw Gunners vest - I've added it to my collection of Longliners Wool vests - one of these vests is selected to wear everyday - perfect for the PNW climate where I am outdoors frequently. Just wish there we some Boatyard pants to add to my closet and life would be perfect and complete.

A vest above the rest

The material (dryhandle) and the construction of this vest are amazing. The navy blue with a dash of orange gives this vest a smart and clean look. I've had this vest and wear it all the time. It has worn in beautifully. I highly recommend this piece of fine outerwear, can't go wrong.

Gunner Vest Purchase

I freaking love this thing. First the first is spot on and yet the heavy material is soft and flexible. Many vests are just too heavy and cumbersome. Lastly the look of the vest is amazing and I am receiving many compliments. I also ordered this thing on a Saturday and was in my hands by early Monday evening.
Thanks team.

My dream vest DOES exist!

This beautiful vest is the vest we’ve been dreaming of - and just maybe, the vest we deserve. 😁
Here in the Upper Left, vests like this are more than practical - with our wet and generally mild winters, you can live in them 3 seasons of the year. This one is beautiful, from its quilted orange (!!) exterior to the gorgeous brown piping and the bunny-soft warm gray fleece inside. And all the pockets!! Pockets for everything. This thing is made of that Dryhandle fabric so it will be perfect in our rainy season (again 3 seasons of the year!)
Now, as the description states, it’s made to fit snug to the body and you do get the nicest fit that way (no gapping, etc) - If you’re layering it under a coat, get your regular size and the trim fit will be perfect.
I however, like to keep my outerwear roomy and I rarely think it’s gonna be cold enough here where I’d be looking to top this with a jacket - more than likely I’ll want to fit it over a bulkier sweater, so I decided to size up. Yes, there’s some roominess in the armholes/shoulders but I’ll put up with that for the flexibility and comfort that the larger size will give me, but your mileage may vary depending on your preference.
As usual, another home run from the team at AR - thank you!!!

Other vests should be outlawed!

Great construction. Great fit - generous cut, but not too big. The weatherproofing should be a definite plus. I got the mustard and it's a different look than I am used to, but a great color for outdoor safety.

Gunner Vest

It is well built and great looking. I originally ordered 2XL as per their sizing chart but had to get a 3XL and now fits great.

The outlaw gunner vest is the perfect mid layer for cold days or by itself in fall or spring. Durable outer fabric with a soft lining. Chest pocket keeps your phone handy and out of the way. What more can you ask for?

Practical, Stylish, and Built to Last

I’ve tried plenty of vests over the years, but this one stands out as the clear winner. From the moment I put it on, it was obvious that every detail was thoughtfully designed. The fit is comfortable without feeling bulky, and it layers perfectly over a hoodie or under a jacket. Whether I’m out on a chilly morning walk, running errands, or traveling, it strikes the ideal balance between warmth and mobility.

Best Vest in closet. Beats out Ritter, Schoffel, & WeatherWool

Those other vests are all great vests...very warm. So warm that they are best under 50 degrees. AR has a much broader temp range, up to 68 actually, but still cozy at 48. The dry cloth stays clean (Pipe Ash doesn't stick like it does to Wool & Fleece, nor does black coffee drips stain...both quickly gone with just a swipe of bandana). Stylish enough to wear to a Mid-Scale restaurant (over a good Chambray Long Sleeve Shirt). A fine product in every way.

Perfect for Fall!

Purchased the Outlaw Gunner Vest in the Spring, thinking I wouldn't get to wear it much if at all before next Fall, but wanted to have it on hand in case my size was gone when Fall rolled around. It was as expected, tremendous quality like I've come to expect from AR products. I did get a chance to wear it after all on a cooler rainy early May day. Love the fit and finish, definitely a more trimmer fit than the Outlaw Gunner Jacket in the same size, the way the description described when checking it out. I like the fleece lined pockets, just wish they were a little bit bigger. Other than that I can see this layered up over one of my AR flannels come Fall. As always, excellent customer service & communication from Engle, Victoria, and the rest of the AR team!

Product Story

For generations, waterfowling was a way of life along the Eastern Seaboard and market gunning had been a necessary and respected profession. With the enactment of the Migratory Bird Act of 1918, the variant interests of the market gunner and the Federal Game Warden unfolded as a real-life cat-and-mouse game. The struggle became legendary and nowhere was it more vividly played out than along the tidewaters and estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay. Part-time friends and part-time foes, one thing the gunner and the warden shared equally was the bitter gnaw of winter’s salty northwest blows.

When it comes to staying warm, modern-day outfitters have nothing on these men. Dressing in layers was just common sense and garments like the Outlaw Gunner Jacket were a key component of every bayman’s garb. Worn as an intermediate layer under oiled cotton smocks and bib pants, early versions were often fashioned from discarded quilts or horse blankets.

Our 25th Anniversary Outlaw Gunner Vest is a limited production run; each vest is marked with a unique serial number identifier. Made with our exclusive, 6oz. DryHandle®, 100% cotton weatherproof fabric. This vest is the sistership of the time-honored and essential component of warmth on the bay…the Outlaw Gunner Jacket. A tight 2x2 quilt pattern over the DryHandle® helps build air pockets in the poly-fill insulation and keeps them in place. The vest is fully lined with a mid-weight fleece. Outfitted with two large hand-warmer pockets, a front chest pocket, two zippered utility pockets inside. The body is fitted, as a vest should be, so that it can be comfortably layered under other jackets and coats or worn on its own as the secondary outer layer.

Spot clean by hand using mild soap if necessary. However, DryHandle® fabric is stubbornly stain-resistant, so a once-over with a damp sponge is usually all you will need.

People Usually Ask

1. Where are your products made?

All of our shirts, pants, outerwear, sweater, belts and moccasins are made in Portugal, mostly in the same shops we've been working with for over 25 years. Our hand-sewn leather goods, hats and a few other items are made in America.

2. How would you describe the fit of your clothes?

Our fit is what we call contemporary, meaning they're not overly baggy or boxy, but have ample room and freedom of movement. Also, our outerwear is uninsulated, or very lightly insulated. It's cut with enough room to allow you to layer underneath, with a sweater, a vest or even a light down-filled jacket. For us, layering is always the way to go!

3. Will your shirts and pants shrink after washing?

Simple answer is no. All of our shirts and pants are pre-shrunk. At most you will experience a 2% shrink factor after washing and drying.

4. What is DryHandle®?

Dryhandle® is a 100% cotton, weatherproof fabric that we develop in 1995. Starting with 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton the thread is very tightly woven resulting in a fabric so dense that it's thornproof and, even at this stage, surpasses the U.S. government test for rainwear. The fabric is then impregnated through the proprietary DryHandle® process which irreversibly transforms the cotton fibers themselves to make them inherently water-resistant and stain-resistant. Unlike oiled or waxed cotton fabrics, DryHandle® is extremely lightweight, has no odor, won't stain other clothing or upholstery and resists stains from hard use and long wear. Despite being water-resistant, the weave contains millions of microscopic pores that vent moisture, making DryHandle® garments exceptionally breathable and comfortable to wear.

5. How long does delivery usually take?

Orders received by 2pm PST are usually shipped the same day. In most cases we ship via USPS Priority Package, and orders to the East Coast typically arrive in 4 days or less. West of The Mississippi orders arrive in 2-3 days.

6. How do i reach the founder of the company?

Easy! You can email him (that would be me, Engle) at engle@atlanticrancher.com or you can call me at 206-919-0943. I am around most of the time, but i miss you, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

7. If an item is out of stock will you let me when it's available again?

We maintain an active "wait list." So when you send a message asking to be notified when the item, color and size becomes available, we actually do something worthwhile with your request. We catalog your request and email you once the item becomes available again.

8. Who writes your copy and are the stories true?

The answer to the first part of this question is: me, Engle Saez, founder of the company. For part #2...there's an old adage that applies here: "you can't make this shit up." And I will just say that the stories I tell are as true as I can make them and as accurate as my memory allows. That's a true story...

9: Where did the name Atlantic Rancher come from?

The origins of our company's name is a long story, one will share in blog post at some point. But for now, all should know that we are forever grateful to Susan Turner for her original and very creative idea.

10: How do I return or exchange a item?

Returns are easy, but please follow our process. Email us at orders@atlanticrancher.com, include your order number in the subject line and tell us what you'd like to return and why. We'll review your return request and email you a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with the return-to shipping address. Please be sure to package your item(s) thoughtfully so goods aren’t damaged in the process. Select and use the carrier of your choice as return shipping is not covered by us. Please select “signature required” to ensure your return package is receipt confirmed.

We’ll let you know via email when your package has been received, inspected and your refund is issued. Refunds usually take 5-10 business days to process.

If you need to exchange an item, the best process is this: 1. Place a new order for the item you want. 2. Return the item you don't want to us, following the process outlined above.
