Product Story

The Boatyard Shirt Story

This shirt is the sistership to our Boatyard Pant and Boatyard Jacket…both birthed at the Marblehead Boatyard, 89 Front Street, circa 1995, and inspired by the wily cast of characters we fondly recall as the Boatyard Boys: Lars, Dinzi, Jake, and a few others we can’t mention.

The backstory on this build is not one I admit often, as it involves an uprising of sorts staged by the Boatyard Boys telling me our shirts were now being made for and worn by the fancy lads at the Eastern Yacht Club and no longer fit for serious yard duty. “Wouldn’t be caught drowned in one of ‘em they told me." These rumblings soaked for a few weeks and after many after-work sessions around the community beer bucket, I finally got it out of them: “those nifty plaids shirts you’re passing off as work shirts ain’t work shirts.”

Alrighty then Boys, here you are…a tugboat of a work shirt you’ll die working in because it’s not one you’re going to outlive.

And what a bruiser of a shirt it is. It wouldn’t be so if not for the 100% cotton, 10oz heavy twill base fabric…you just will not wear through it. This build has doubled-up shoulder coverings, wrist-to-elbow wear patches, a sturdy built-up collar, extra tall chest pockets with snap closures and new, only available on this shirt, our signature dog-house button closure configuration. And to honor the Boatyard Boys unique sense of fashion, the shirts are garment dyed in their favorite colors: khaki, olive, burgundy and navy.

The Original Boatyard Shirt, one of our finest moments, is being reintroduced now as the 25th Anniversary Edition, even though we’re a little late due to all the s**t going on in the world.  Each shirt carries the25th Anniversary Edition label and is marked with its unique serial number identifier.

Comments: Quality and lasting value is evident in product materials and design. One possible suggestion is designing sporting shirts with a gusseted armpit like the tried and true, but now extinguished, Willis & Geiger shirts.
Built to handle anything

I bought this shirt for a purpose that was likely unintended. I own an international hunting consultancy and hunt worldwide. I needed a shirt with a tight enough weave to prevent Tsetse flies from biting through while hunting Cape Buffalo. This is it.

Homesteader’s best friend

A couple of years ago I lived up on an off grid homestead on Mauna Kea on the big Island Hawaii. I wanted something to stand up to the work and the weather: lots of tree work, caring for horses, ripping out thorns, lugging fuel for generators, building fences. This shirt in navy was the answer. If I had a signature look down in town it was my Boatyard, Levi 517s and red wing iron rangers. Fast forward a couple of years, working on the US mainland I lost it. I had to go out and immediately buy a duplicate.
I was impatient for my new one to arrive. Yesterday I went back to the conference center where I hold my board meeting, and there was my OG boatyard. So now I have two. I should have gone with a different color. These are indestructible and look amazing. They will outlast me. This is the best shirt on earth.

Comments: Great overall experience.
Sturdy

Solid shirt. Built to last and nearly indestructible. Only down side is mine had a button with some loose thread and then an another spot on the right cuff with some thread coming out as well. Hopefully just cosmetic, but apart from that it’s perfect. Would give it 5/5 stars if not for that. The tag on the neck and front are a cool touch too.

The "work horse" of shirts!

These are my everyday work shirts. Even when it's cold and rainy toss a thermal under and you have the perfect piece of armor. Wife took this pick and said "Hot woodsman"...luckily she didn't come up for a hug. AR ya'll need to sell cologne!

Keep up the outstanding work. Have 3 boatyards and LOVE every one!

Stylish meets sturdy and functional

Among the several pieces of new clothing recently purchased to freshen up my wardrobe this shirt is most frequently worn. The weight and handsome solid burgundy color of its cotton twill offer a comfortable alternative to the plaid flannel shirts which have been my go to mid season and winter wear for years. I’ve received multiple compliments for layering the shirt with red or gold t shirts under it to add a spark of color contrast. I especially like the way the fabric in the collar can be sculpted to stand up or lay flat and the functionality of the ample chest pockets. I’ve machine washed the shirt at least twice since purchase and am pleased with the way the fabric holds the structure of the shirt and its feel against the skin. It is plainly durable for years as I hoped. Exceptional quality priced fairly and affordably

Boatyard. Robust. Handsome Shirt

Before i made my feedback i would like the reader to know that actually use the shirt through non stop of outdoor work, hiking, chopping wood and even workout with this shirt. I abuse it and im not shy to get it dirty and neither im afraid that i might tear it apart on the armpit area with all the pulling and turning. Heres my feed back listed below:
1. Like i said i wear it non stop and abuse it for a month. Im abusive with my clothing after all the beating all the high stress area like back , buttons, button holes, arm pit remains solid and intact.
2. I could tell that person who design this knows what work is about and how body moves. The double fabric on the shoulder and forearm are wonderful and the pleated back on each side make movement on the back and body feels free and not restricted . The first 2-3 button from the neck has a slanted button whole that makes it easier to button or unbutton it when im have gloves on or doing it single handed.I like also the thicker width on the cuff , it feels solid and looks great also folded.
3. Im normally size medium and decided to go large because like i said i bought this primarily for work and for coming fall that i can wear a thermal henleys underneath or even flannel and boy it look sharp! I realize after whole day of work i can just brush it and im ready to go for lunch with my wife and still looks presentable mad respectable. I believe it defends on whats your goal in buying this, if I want it underneath my thick winter jacket i could go medium but for fall i like it as an overshirt function and style.
3. I called and email the owner to get some more product info and is very personable and helpful thats huge for me i support small business and craftsman.
4. If there’s something i would request to them is hopefully they will make this in Undye natural cotton color. As i wear mine out and becomes dirty it becomes even more handsome. Imagine this natural
Color with dirt and crease on them its going to look fantastic.

In conclusion its a lot of quality, function and lots of shirt for the money your paying for me its worth every penny and ill wear this for a long time. With cost per wear of a robust clothing that will give me a lot of use its saving me money that getting cheap low quality product.

Maybe the toughest, thickest shirt I've ever owned

I bought the AR Chamois shirt jac first before this and initially thought that was the thickest, warmest button down I'd ever owned. Then I bought the Boatyard shirt jac and I think this has taken over the title from the Chamois (as good as that one is as well). The Boatyard shirt jac is so unbelievable tough and thick, it's almost like wearing a canvas tarp (though way more comfortable than that). I can't imagine anything causing a significant rip/tear in this. It looks great as well. I bought this during the summer so haven't had a chance to wear it yet as it's way too much material for the summer heat, but I'm looking forward to wearing this out when it gets colder. Will buy a couple more colors as well.

High quality product

I saw someone wearing the boatyard shirt jack in a bar, loved how it looked and bought one that night. They run a bit big so I exchanged my item for a size down. Anna helped me with the exchange and was very responsive. I love how the shirt fits and looks, my favorite part is i can tell it’ll last me the rest of my life.

An amazing shirt that should last a lifetime.

Wears a little large, which makes it great for layering. I own three and it has become my go to shirt during the cooler months.

People Usually Ask

1. Where are your products made?

All of our shirts, pants, outerwear, sweater, belts and moccasins are made in Portugal, mostly in the same shops we've been working with for over 25 years. Our hand-sewn leather goods, hats and a few other items are made in America.

2. How would you describe the fit of your clothes?

Our fit is what we call contemporary, meaning they're not overly baggy or boxy, but have ample room and freedom of movement. Also, our outerwear is uninsulated, or very lightly insulated. It's cut with enough room to allow you to layer underneath, with a sweater, a vest or even a light down-filled jacket. For us, layering is always the way to go!

3. Will your shirts and pants shrink after washing?

Simple answer is no. All of our shirts and pants are pre-shrunk. At most you will experience a 2% shrink factor after washing and drying.

4. What is DryHandle®?

Dryhandle® is a 100% cotton, weatherproof fabric that we develop in 1995. Starting with 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton the thread is very tightly woven resulting in a fabric so dense that it's thornproof and, even at this stage, surpasses the U.S. government test for rainwear. The fabric is then impregnated through the proprietary DryHandle® process which irreversibly transforms the cotton fibers themselves to make them inherently water-resistant and stain-resistant. Unlike oiled or waxed cotton fabrics, DryHandle® is extremely lightweight, has no odor, won't stain other clothing or upholstery and resists stains from hard use and long wear. Despite being water-resistant, the weave contains millions of microscopic pores that vent moisture, making DryHandle® garments exceptionally breathable and comfortable to wear.

5. How long does delivery usually take?

Orders received by 2pm PST are usually shipped the same day. In most cases we ship via USPS Priority Package, and orders to the East Coast typically arrive in 4 days or less. West of The Mississippi orders arrive in 2-3 days.

6. How do i reach the founder of the company?

Easy! You can email him (that would be me, Engle) at engle@atlanticrancher.com or you can call me at 206-919-0943. I am around most of the time, but i miss you, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

7. If an item is out of stock will you let me when it's available again?

We maintain an active "wait list." So when you send a message asking to be notified when the item, color and size becomes available, we actually do something worthwhile with your request. We catalog your request and email you once the item becomes available again.

8. Who writes your copy and are the stories true?

The answer to the first part of this question is: me, Engle Saez, founder of the company. For part #2...there's an old adage that applies here: "you can't make this shit up." And I will just say that the stories I tell are as true as I can make them and as accurate as my memory allows. That's a true story...

9: Where did the name Atlantic Rancher come from?

The origins of our company's name is a long story, one will share in blog post at some point. But for now, all should know that we are forever grateful to Susan Turner for her original and very creative idea.

10: How do I return or exchange a item?

Returns are easy, but please follow our process. Email us at orders@atlanticrancher.com, include your order number in the subject line and tell us what you'd like to return and why. We'll review your return request and email you a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with the return-to shipping address. Please be sure to package your item(s) thoughtfully so goods aren’t damaged in the process. Select and use the carrier of your choice as return shipping is not covered by us. Please select “signature required” to ensure your return package is receipt confirmed.

We’ll let you know via email when your package has been received, inspected and your refund is issued. Refunds usually take 5-10 business days to process.

If you need to exchange an item, the best process is this: 1. Place a new order for the item you want. 2. Return the item you don't want to us, following the process outlined above.
