Breathability and Everyday Use
I was looking for a more breathable jacket for wet weather. I already own a Gortex jacket, and while it does an excellent job repelling water, it feels too warm for misty days or light rain. It is also not ideal for working outdoors because the material can tear fairly easily.
That is where the Essex Squall Jacket stands out. I have had it for about two weeks, and with the recent weather, I have worn it several times for yard work and for commuting to work.
Weather Protection and Comfort
Although it is rated as water-resistant, it kept me completely dry through two heavy downpours. Even though the material is thicker than my standard rain jacket, it does not feel heavy.
The jacket is also designed well for airflow. It has a large rear vent that allows heat to escape while still keeping water out, along with two underarm vents for added breathability.
Fit and Practical Details
The hood includes an adjustment that lets you tighten the opening slightly, which improves the fit. I especially appreciate the size of the hood because it actually helps keep rain off my glasses.
The jacket also feels very well made. The zipper is sturdy and easy to use, and several small details show thoughtful design:
• reinforcements behind the pocket covers instead of attaching them directly to the jacket material
• Velcro fasteners at the waist for a tighter fit when needed
• an interior pocket large enough to hold my iPhone comfortably
• large pocket buttons that are easy to open
Overall Impression
Overall, the Essex Squall Jacket feels durable, practical, and comfortable. Based on my experience so far, I can see myself using it for years, not just a few seasons.
