Excerpt from our 1997 winter catalog.
Sometime during the winter of 1996, I think it was the week between Christmas and New year’s, a fellow from Scotland had an appointment to show us some “knitted stuff” from Ireland and the UK. His appointment coincided with a beauty of a Nor’easter, so we closed up shop around noon that day and headed to Maddie’s…Marblehead’s infamous watering hole just a block away. I pinned a note on the door that read something like: Dear Mr. Guy from Scottland. I doubt very much you’ll see
this note, but if you do, retrace your steps in the snow, under the crane through the boatyard. Make a left on Front St. and a right on State. We’re half-a-block up on the left waiting for you. Maddie’s. Well, durn if he didn’t come bouncing through the red door with his little duffle bag and rosy cheeks. The socks he showed me could have been out of paper mâché and I still would’ve bought them.
Six months later, long after I had completely forgotten about the Guy from Scotland, my order showed up and I have been wearing Pennine Socks ever since. Folks say they’re warm and such. I don’t know about that. My feet are always cold. All I can say is these socks are indestructible and fit real nice. -- Engle
For over 170 years, Pennine has focused its attention on the production of socks for country pursuits such as hunting, shooting and fishing.
Today, Pennine remains an independent family-run business, driven by the same values that guided its founders. The company still employs traditional knitters, linkers and trimmers and uses techniques passed down the generations in order to maintain its reputation as the world’s most prestigious country and shooting
socks maker.
