shelter in the saltmarsh
Essex Marsh Shirt-Jack, 30th Anniv. Edition - SHIPS NOV. 13th
SHIPS NOV. 13TH.
Details
Rugged – Please don’t call this a shirt…it’s not. We only call it so to respect its origin and evolution towards this 30th Anniv. Edition. And you don’t need to treat this garment with extraordinary care, or concern for maintaining its appearance after years of wear. In fact, this jacket will never look the same twice, from one day to the next, it will proudly display every new crease and scrape it earns as it catalogs your adventures for future contemplation.
Durable – Built with 8oz DryHandle®, our proprietary 100% cotton weatherproof fabric. Double needle stitched throughout using a hearty, 104 size bonded nylon thread.
Functional – Every aspect of this jacket is designed to serve the purpose for which it was intended. Thoughtful and carefully assembled, the list is impressive: convertible extreme weather collar; integrated cuff-to-elbow patch; quilted shoulder panels; back yoke ventilation system; solid brass snap closures; Doghouse button configuration at upper chest; bellows pockets throughout.
The Build – This jacket is constructed in our outerwear shop, where heavy duty sewing equipment is deployed to ensure the enduring integrity of every seam, every joint and every reinforcement stitch. It’s in this tiny, humble shop in the heart of the Rio Tinto region of Portugal, where our man and fellow outdoorsman, Sergio, the second-generation owner operator, and his team of craftsmen and women create masterpieces like this, literally one at a time.
The wearing – Cut like an outerwear garment with plenty of room in the torso, shoulders and sleeves to accommodate considerable layering. Unlined except for the sleeves, this is a multipurpose kit that can protect you against the wild elements of the saltmarsh just as well as it can from the wilderness of New York’s Madison Ave. And you can tell those that ask, and they will, that jacket is completely unruly and difficult to manage under the best of times.
During the early years of the company, the Essex Marsh Shirt/ Jack went through numerous iterations prior to becoming the durable, multipurpose kit of marsh wear it is today, in this 30th Anniv. Edition. The early versions were truly a shirt. But please note this is no longer a shirt, it’s evolved over the years and now presents more as a jacket than a shirt. Forsure, this is not a garment that you will ever tuck in to your pants. This build deploys our heavy weight, 8oz. DryHandle, our proprietary, 100% weatherproof fabric. It’s not built in our shirt shop, but rather in our outerwear shop where heavier fabrics are sewn using much heavier equipment and a hardy TEX 104 size bonded nylon thread. The cut is that of an outerwear garment with plenty of room in the torso, shoulders and sleeves to accommodate considerable
layering.
Functional brass snaps provide closure to the sleeve cuffs and torso, up to the mid-chest area where our Doghouse button configuration takes over and provides a uniquely customizable fit.
The collar is a functional contraption all its own. Designed specifically to shield users from the unpredictable weather of the saltmarsh. Practical as it is clever, the collar lays perfectly flat when in the down position, and extends to the up position with one pull, and to the full-up position when released from its Velcro® fastener points with a second pull. In the fully extended position, the collar provides 4” of cover above the collar stand.
Ventilation is provided by the back yoke cape that extends to several inches below the shoulder blades and overlaps the bottom of the jacket leaving a horizontal vent and by the open shoulder gussets where the upper sleeves join the back yoke.
The pocket configuration includes two, full sized, deep bellows hand pockets at the hip and two bellows chest pockets, big enough to hold your favorite 12oz beverage or a cell phone.
The length is like a jacket, and hits below the hips at about your mid-thumb joint.
Go to the saltmarsh often…stay through the ebb, gather marsh heather and sea lavender…fill your lungs with that salty air and ride the oncoming tide home.

People Usually Ask
1. Where are your products made?
All of our shirts, pants, outerwear, sweater, belts and moccasins are made in Portugal, mostly in the same shops we've been working with for over 25 years. Our hand-sewn leather goods, hats and a few other items are made in America.
2. How would you describe the fit of your clothes?
Our fit is what we call contemporary, meaning they're not overly baggy or boxy, but have ample room and freedom of movement. Also, our outerwear is uninsulated, or very lightly insulated. It's cut with enough room to allow you to layer underneath, with a sweater, a vest or even a light down-filled jacket. For us, layering is always the way to go!
3. Will your shirts and pants shrink after washing?
Simple answer is no. All of our shirts and pants are pre-shrunk. At most you will experience a 2% shrink factor after washing and drying.
4. What is DryHandle®?
Dryhandle® is a 100% cotton, weatherproof fabric that we develop in 1995. Starting with 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton the thread is very tightly woven resulting in a fabric so dense that it's thornproof and, even at this stage, surpasses the U.S. government test for rainwear. The fabric is then impregnated through the proprietary DryHandle® process which irreversibly transforms the cotton fibers themselves to make them inherently water-resistant and stain-resistant. Unlike oiled or waxed cotton fabrics, DryHandle® is extremely lightweight, has no odor, won't stain other clothing or upholstery and resists stains from hard use and long wear. Despite being water-resistant, the weave contains millions of microscopic pores that vent moisture, making DryHandle® garments exceptionally breathable and comfortable to wear.
5. How long does delivery usually take?
Orders received by 2pm PST are usually shipped the same day. In most cases we ship via USPS Priority Package, and orders to the East Coast typically arrive in 4 days or less. West of The Mississippi orders arrive in 2-3 days.
6. How do i reach the founder of the company?
Easy! You can email him (that would be me, Engle) at engle@atlanticrancher.com or you can call me at 206-919-0943. I am around most of the time, but i miss you, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
7. If an item is out of stock will you let me when it's available again?
We maintain an active "wait list." So when you send a message asking to be notified when the item, color and size becomes available, we actually do something worthwhile with your request. We catalog your request and email you once the item becomes available again.
8. Who writes your copy and are the stories true?
The answer to the first part of this question is: me, Engle Saez, founder of the company. For part #2...there's an old adage that applies here: "you can't make this shit up." And I will just say that the stories I tell are as true as I can make them and as accurate as my memory allows. That's a true story...
9: Where did the name Atlantic Rancher come from?
The origins of our company's name is a long story, one will share in blog post at some point. But for now, all should know that we are forever grateful to Susan Turner for her original and very creative idea.
10: How do I return or exchange a item?
Returns are easy, but please follow our process. Email us at orders@atlanticrancher.com, include your order number in the subject line and tell us what you'd like to return and why. We'll review your return request and email you a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with the return-to shipping address. Please be sure to package your item(s) thoughtfully so goods aren’t damaged in the process. Select and use the carrier of your choice as return shipping is not covered by us. Please select “signature required” to ensure your return package is receipt confirmed.
We’ll let you know via email when your package has been received, inspected and your refund is issued. Refunds usually take 5-10 business days to process.
If you need to exchange an item, the best process is this: 1. Place a new order for the item you want. 2. Return the item you don't want to us, following the process outlined above.
