Story

The Boatyard Shirt Story

This shirt is the sistership to our Boatyard Pant and Boatyard Jacket…both birthed at the Marblehead Boatyard, 89 Front Street, circa 1995, and inspired by the wily cast of characters we fondly recall as the Boatyard Boys: Lars, Dinzi, Jake, and a few others we can’t mention.

The backstory on this build is not one I admit often, as it involves an uprising of sorts staged by the Boatyard Boys telling me our shirts were now being made for and worn by the fancy lads at the Eastern Yacht Club and no longer fit for serious yard duty. “Wouldn’t be caught drowned in one of ‘em they told me." These rumblings soaked for a few weeks and after many after-work sessions around the community beer bucket, I finally got it out of them: “those nifty plaids shirts you’re passing off as work shirts ain’t work shirts.”

Alrighty then Boys, here you are…a tugboat of a work shirt you’ll die working in because it’s not one you’re going to outlive.

And what a bruiser of a shirt it is. It wouldn’t be so if not for the 100% cotton, 10oz heavy twill base fabric…you just will not wear through it. This build has doubled-up shoulder coverings, wrist-to-elbow wear patches, a sturdy built-up collar, extra tall chest pockets with snap closures and new, only available on this shirt, our signature dog-house button closure configuration. And to honor the Boatyard Boys unique sense of fashion, the shirts are garment dyed in their favorite colors: khaki, olive, burgundy and navy.

The Original Boatyard Shirt, one of our finest moments, is being reintroduced now as the 25th Anniversary Edition, even though we’re a little late due to all the s**t going on in the world.  Each shirt carries the25th Anniversary Edition label and is marked with its unique serial number identifier.

Great looking shirt, I like the pattern on the shoulders, elbow-patch and weight of the fabric. That it’s made in Portugal and not in China is a big plus.

Serious Work Shirt

The boatyard shirt is a serious piece of kit. Thick fabric that feels like it will last for years with reinforcement in all the right places. Love the spacing of the top few buttons to give you flexibility on how open you leave the collar. Runs a little large, so consider ordering down if you plan to wear more as a shirt than a jacket.

Fantastic shirt except for one small thing!

I have many AR jackets and gear and I love every item. Amazing quality with a great fit and sure to be rugged and durable. The boatyard shirt is no different and looks ready for a lifetime of wear and the quality is exceptional. There is only one small change I would make. Please make the button holes larger! The quality of the buttons and stitching is great, but when I received it, it was very challenging to unbutton it. I’ve never encountered this on any AR clothing or any other clothing I have ever owned. It’s the button equivalent of a childproof prescription bottle. I’m sure it will loosen up naturally with wear. I helped each button bole along with a pair of needle nosed pliers to stretch them. By comparison, the cruiser jacket has incredible robust and secure buttons and it’s easy to button and unbutton. Maybe I just had a one off problem and I still give the shirt top ratings given the fit, looks and quality. As far as sizing goes, I ordered my normal size (XL) and it’s a good fit with room for layering but not too baggy or long. I’m 5’11 215 lbs with a 48 suit jacket size and the fit in my chest and shoulders is usually the binding constraint. I probably could have worn a large if I wanted a more tailored fit to wear with a t shirt, but I’m happy with the XL.

Boatyard Shirt

Again, I am impressed by the boatyard shirt. This was my second purchase of said garment. I chose the khaki one this time. The fabric quality, stitching and attention to detail was impressive. Highly recommend these shirts. It should outlive me, given the quality. Wore my green one over a black T-shirt recently, and was told I looked like a combat photo-journalist. Nice. One downside was that I had to pay $68.00 in excise tax thanks to the latest stupid tariffs.

Great Shirt

Very well made shirt that is both roomy and comfortable. It is quite robust. Ample front pockets, great fit, and already had 2 compliments on it. Considering buying another one already.
