SHIRT SIZING
The Chamois Dock Shirt in Navy
$164.00 USD
Chamois Dock Shirt, 100% Cotton
We’ve built a lot of great shirts over the years. Looking back, every one of them owes its pedigree to this one…the patriarch of our shirt program. As with all our builds, it all starts with the superior raw material selection. As my Uncle Jack used to say: “It’s tough getting to a place called great starting from a place called so-so.” True in boatbuilding, true in decoy carving and true here in our Chamois Dock Shirt.
The Cloth
Chamois cloth is a Northeastern Seaboard classic, made popular by that fellow from Maine in the 1920s. We’ve taken Chamois cloth up a few notches by selecting a superior, Portuguese 100% cotton yarn and weaving it in a twill pattern. Why twill? Because in a twill weave the yarns are packed more tightly together which makes the fabric stronger, thicker and more abrasion resistant than plain weave made from the same yarn. After some serious napping and brushing on both sides of the fabric, we end up with this 10oz. weight, bruiser of a fabric.
The Build
- Double-needle stitching throughout
- Two, military-style angled front pockets with button closure flaps
- Reinforced hem patch seams with zig-zag stitching
- Two, 1” expansion plackets at shoulder back
- Engineered underarm gussets with two sewn-in ventilation eyelets
- Collar, pocket flaps and sleeve cuffs are lined with nylon satin
- Sewn-in name tag eyelets, left pocket
- Built in Portugal
The Fit
- Cut a bit roomier than our standard block (the full torso), and also in the neck and sleeves.
The Wearing
- The Chamois Dock Shirt can be tucked in; however, most will wear it un-tucked as an overshirt or shirt-jack, especially if deployed as workwear out on the water, in the boatyard or in the field.
- Works best as a secondary layer, worn over a short sleeve or long sleeve t-shirt, even over another button up shirt, like a flannel or a lightweight hoodie or ¼ zip.

Story:
This shirt is the sistership to our Boatyard Pant and Boatyard Jacket…both birthed at the Marblehead Boatyard, 89 Front Street, circa 1995, and inspired by the wily cast of characters we fondly recall as the Boatyard Boys: Dinzi, Moose, Lars, Tobi, and a few others we can’t mention.
The backstory on this build is not one I admit often, as it involves an uprising of sorts staged by the Boatyard Boys saying our shirt were now being made for and worn by the fancy lads at the Eastern Yacht Club and no longer fit for serious yard duty. “Wouldn’t be caught drowned in one of ‘em” they told me. These rumblings soaked for a few weeks and after many after-work sessions around the community beer bucket, I finally got it out of them: “those nifty plaids shirts you’re passing off as work shirts ain’t work shirts.”
Alrighty then Boys, here you are…a tugboat of a work shirt you’ll die working in because it’s not one you’re going to outlive. And what a bruiser of a shirt it is. It wouldn’t be so if not for the 100% cotton, 10oz heavy twill base fabric…you just will not wear through it. This build has doubled-up shoulder coverings, wrist-to-elbow wear patches, a sturdy built-up collar, extra tall chest pockets with snap closures and new, only available on this shirt, our signature dog-house button closure configuration. And to honor the Boatyard Boys unique sense of fashion, the shirts are garment dyed in their favorite colors: khaki, olive, and navy.
The Original Boatyard Shirt, one of our finest moments, is being reintroduced now as the 25th Anniversary Edition, even though we’re a little late due to all the s**t going on in the world. Each shirt carries the 25th Anniversary Edition label and is marked with its unique serial number identifier.
