DETAILS

SOFT ENOUGH TO WEAR COMFORTABLY AGAINST YOUR SKIN. It’s rare to find a sweater that feels both beefy and is ultra-soft. Extra fine Merino wool makes this so. Zero itch guaranteed.

THICK, ROBUST, AND DURABLE. This is not a “handle-with-care” sweater…it’s a piece of equipment built to perform in tough environments and handle whatever weather.

THE IDEAL EVERYDAY SWEATER – looks great, feels great, has excellent thermal management, and serves equally well as an outer layer or mid-layer.

TOPS OFF ANY PANT AND SHIRT COMBINATION. You won’t find yourself wondering what this sweater “goes with.” You put it on, it holds its shape and everything else falls in place.

TRUE TO SIZE…but size up if you’re planning on piling on layers underneath.

LIMITED EDITION – Our 25th Anniversary Ranger's Uniform Sweater is a limited production run, each is marked with a unique serial number identifier.

The Ranger's Uniform Sweater was commissioned in 1995 by The Trustees of Reservations, Ipswich, Ma., the oldest conservation land trust in America, founded by Charles Eliot, in 1891. Their requirements were exacting. For it to be adopted as part of the Ranger’s Uniform, it had to be practical and serve double duty…as a layering piece but sturdy and warm enough to go it alone in the winters of the Massachusetts coastline.

Rancher's uniform sweater

I love the Blue one I bought last fall of 2022..I wore it every day for 6 months working on a farm.....every day!!! between 8 to 16 hours a day working the farm.. even crawling in mud and that sweater took a beating,,its the best piece of clothing I think I have ever owned!!!..you would never know by looking at it..it barely looks worn, and I beat the hell out of it!!! Any other sweater would have been destroyed. I just bought a second one in green.

Purchased in blue last year, this became my go to for staying warm. Thick, comfortable and functional, this sweater not only feels great, it look great as well. I get many questions and compliments while wearing it, so when the green came back in stock, I jumped right on it.

The Ranger's Uniform Sweater Story

Why would anyone call this a “uniform sweater?”

Well, because that’s precisely how it came to be…commissioned in 1995 by The Trustees of Reservations, Ipswich, Ma., the oldest conservation land trust in America, founded by Charles Eliot, in 1891. Their requirements were exacting. For it to be adopted as part of the Ranger’s Uniform, it had to be practical and serve double duty…as a layering piece but sturdy and warm enough to go it alone in the winters of the Massachusetts coastline. Simple enough? Not exactly. It took us well over a dozen prototypes to get The Ranger’s Uniform Sweater approved by then Ranger, Dave Rimmer.

It all starts with a hardy and naturally water resistant, 7ga yarn spun from 100% Extafine Merino wool. The entire sweater is “fully fashioned” (odd term as it has nothing to do with fashion) which means that every panel of the sweater is engineered to fit and conform to the curves and measurements of its adjoining components. This is most noticeable where the body meets the armhole, the neck, the shoulder and of course as it tapers to the waist. What’s the alternative and how are most sweaters made? Cut-and-Sew…which is akin to using a cookie cutter to form a loaf of bread.

The most distinctive and perhaps the most functional part of the Ranger’s Uniform Sweater is inset bi-swing shoulder gusset hidden between the shoulder blade and sleeve. It’s made of lighter gage yarn that expands naturally with the movement of the arm and shoulder. We’ve yet to come across a sweater that has this feature!

The collar is asymmetrical, so it lays perfectly flat at the shoulder-neck point and widens slightly as it comes to the front. The cuff and waist are doubled and 4 needle flat-lock stitched…they’ll never stretch out. And the elbow patches are, of course, made from our proprietary DryHandle®, 100% cotton weatherproof fabric.

Said and done, this sweater is built for endurance…a 1x1 Jersey knit with dense, tightly spun yarns, it has a smooth, non-scratchy hand feel that will wear like chainmail. It will not pill or stretch out. And because of merino wool’s exceptional and complex fiber make up, this sweater is naturally water repellent, moving all moisture to the surface where it naturally evaporates, keeping you warm and dry.

We are reintroducing this legendary piece of gear to commemorate our 25th Anniversary.

Each piece will carry this commemorative label, each marked with its unique serial number identifier.

People Usually Ask

1. Where are your products made?

All of our shirts, pants, outerwear, sweater, belts and moccasins are made in Portugal, mostly in the same shops we've been working with for over 25 years. Our hand-sewn leather goods, hats and a few other items are made in America.

2. How would you describe the fit of your clothes?

Our fit is what we call contemporary, meaning they're not overly baggy or boxy, but have ample room and freedom of movement. Also, our outerwear is uninsulated, or very lightly insulated. It's cut with enough room to allow you to layer underneath, with a sweater, a vest or even a light down-filled jacket. For us, layering is always the way to go!

3. Will your shirts and pants shrink after washing?

Simple answer is no. All of our shirts and pants are pre-shrunk. At most you will experience a 2% shrink factor after washing and drying.

4. What is DryHandle®?

Dryhandle® is a 100% cotton, weatherproof fabric that we develop in 1995. Starting with 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton the thread is very tightly woven resulting in a fabric so dense that it's thornproof and, even at this stage, surpasses the U.S. government test for rainwear. The fabric is then impregnated through the proprietary DryHandle® process which irreversibly transforms the cotton fibers themselves to make them inherently water-resistant and stain-resistant. Unlike oiled or waxed cotton fabrics, DryHandle® is extremely lightweight, has no odor, won't stain other clothing or upholstery and resists stains from hard use and long wear. Despite being water-resistant, the weave contains millions of microscopic pores that vent moisture, making DryHandle® garments exceptionally breathable and comfortable to wear.

5. How long does delivery usually take?

Orders received by 2pm PST are usually shipped the same day. In most cases we ship via USPS Priority Package, and orders to the East Coast typically arrive in 4 days or less. West of The Mississippi orders arrive in 2-3 days.

6. How do i reach the founder of the company?

Easy! You can email him (that would be me, Engle) at engle@atlanticrancher.com or you can call me at 206-919-0943. I am around most of the time, but i miss you, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

7. If an item is out of stock will you let me when it's available again?

We maintain an active "wait list." So when you send a message asking to be notified when the item, color and size becomes available, we actually do something worthwhile with your request. We catalog your request and email you once the item becomes available again.

8. Who writes your copy and are the stories true?

The answer to the first part of this question is: me, Engle Saez, founder of the company. For part #2...there's an old adage that applies here: "you can't make this shit up." And I will just say that the stories I tell are as true as I can make them and as accurate as my memory allows. That's a true story...

9: Where did the name Atlantic Rancher come from?

The origins of our company's name is a long story, one will share in blog post at some point. But for now, all should know that we are forever grateful to Susan Turner for her original and very creative idea.

10: How do I return or exchange a item?

Returns are easy, but please follow our process. Email us at orders@atlanticrancher.com, include your order number in the subject line and tell us what you'd like to return and why. We'll review your return request and email you a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with the return-to shipping address. Please be sure to package your item(s) thoughtfully so goods aren’t damaged in the process. Select and use the carrier of your choice as return shipping is not covered by us. Please select “signature required” to ensure your return package is receipt confirmed.

We’ll let you know via email when your package has been received, inspected and your refund is issued. Refunds usually take 5-10 business days to process.

If you need to exchange an item, the best process is this: 1. Place a new order for the item you want. 2. Return the item you don't want to us, following the process outlined above.
